Tackling the Roof phase 2

It was time to start at this end of the house..we had been using the rooms here and trying to delay doing this. But the winter of 2007-2008 had taken its toll and the gable walls were getting drenched and the roof was slowly collapsing and the weight could have brought the walls down with it.
Ian was on the roof ripping chunks out while I was running around on the ground trying to keep up with the mountains of thatch and turf coming off our roof.
Poor ole house...must have been like getting the worst haircut ever.
You can clearly see the ancient bramble spars still held in place in the turf layer that was below the thatch.
The only positive thing about loosing our gorgeous roof was that we got a great compost heap.

The window here is probably as old as the house. The panes are handblown original windows and will be restored and going back in here.

Honestly thought we would save this carpet...But sadly not..we also thought we would have the roof covered quickly, in about 6 months.
This is the chimney that came down a few months earlier. You can just make out the new rebuild at the top of the picture.

Its hard to believe that these rickety set of sticks is what our old thatch and turf had been lying on for a couple of hundred years.
